What did my dad mean when he gave me this sleep remedy?

There was one night where I could not sleep. I went to my dad and asked what should I do to get to get relief. He jokingly said to count cattlecars and/or zyklon B cans.

  • count something boring. I don’t know

  • zyklon b is a cyanide-based insecticide… and i’m pretty sure cattle cars are on trains…
i hope he was joking but if not… serious issues need to be worked out.

  • I think he was joking, because cattle cars are trains that brought the Jews (and others) to Auschwitz, and Zyklon B was used to kill them.

Maybe he was trying to give you nightmares?

  • Get your mind off whatever was making you sleepless and think of a long train of cattle cars or tanker cars. The same as counting sheep.

When you are having trouble falling asleep, try this. Inhale (through your nose) deeply while counting to 8, then exhale (through your mouth) while counting to 8. Repeat this exercise 10 times, while thinking of a clear blue lake, or a quiet meadow. It always works for me.
