What can affect dreams? Can Nightmares/Bad Dreams actually affect your quality of sleep?

Bobby S asked:

The other night I had an adventurous, yet kind of scary and weird dream. I am wondering what all can be factors in what kind of dreams we have. Also, why do we have dreams? Can bad dreams affect the quality of sleep and stress you?

  • NOT dreaming is bad for you. Everyone has to reach that depth of sleep where they dream…if you take that away you can get sick and depressed and develop sleep deprivation.

  • Dreams can affect your quality of sleep and I’ll give you a short example. If you were dreaming about being stressed/worried/scared about something you could wake up fatigued not feeling like you’ve gotten any sleep at all.

  • I’ve heard it said that dreams are our brain’s way of dealing with the things we don’t have time to deal with during the daytime. Dreams are often really representative, and aren’t to be taken literally. Trying going to for the interpretation dictionary.
Also, I find that when I have a truly terrifying nightmare, I sleep soundly and I don’t move at all, so I actually love having nightmares.

  • Yes they can have an impact on your sleep and many things that we deal with or think about in our daily lives can have a direct impact on our dreams. If your keep having bad experiences you can try to control by thinking of something positive as you fall to sleep which sometimes helps

  • Lots of things can affect your dreams. Some of them are just thoughts that the brain generates, others are things that you have been experiencing, dwelling on, wishing, a channel of communication between our world and others, or a way for our unconscious thoughts to arise. Can bad dreams affect you, probably just like a good dream will cheer you through the day a really bad nightmare might wake you up or even prevent you from falling back to sleep later on.

  • Yes bad dreams can affect the quality of sleep that you get and yes they can affect you and give you extra unneeded stress

  • Dream cycles are in 90 minute intervals. You will have the best sleep if you try to schedule sleeping habits ending on a cycle. You ever notice that your bad or good dreams that you remember end in the middle and not the end? That’s because you woke up before your cycle was over. Plus you could sleep 3 hours and feel better than if you slept for 4 hours.

I always have weird dreams after eating pizza. Everything affects your dreams. Might be things that you subconsciously think about or something that you may be going through at a particular time.

  • What you eat can affect your dreams. Stay away from spicy foods and cut back on sugars.
