
It is not true that older you are, the more likely you are to have an insomnia. Contrary to what most of us believe, instead of insomnia and sleep issues linked to aging, health issues and medical complications are more likely the reason why our elderly have a hard time getting a good night's rest.
Just like other adults, our seniors need an average of 7 to 8 hours of sleep every day in order for them to fully function the following morning. Sleep is a very crucial and important component of a person's day to day activity. It is where the body and mind processes and rests making it ready for another day. Sleep improves memory formation and concentration, allows for body tissue repairs, and refreshes the body system preventing diseases. As we age, high quality of sleep is very much essential.
Lack of sleep can cause a person to feel real tired and fatigued the whole day.
His reflexes also slow down and he feels that he has little or no energy. Performance level drops due to lack of sleep. His ability to focus and concentrate is affected. Some people with insomnia are very irritable and easily flare up for very petty reasons. Worse comes to worst, a person with insomnia can even experience hallucinations. It can also be linked to depression.
For the elderly, the most common cause of insomnia is poor sleeping habits which include irregular sleep hours. Most of them have lots of free time in the afternoon so they frequently nap during daytime. Another cause may be because of their medical conditions. Severe pain can keep you from sleeping well. Insomnia in our elderly can also be due to the medications that they take to stimulate them leading to inability to sleep.
Since most of our elderly cannot move as active as the young are, their lack of exercise can cause their brains to just be inactive and sleepy.
If problems with insomnia persist with our elderly, better consult your doctors to create a plan and find solutions that are best for him and his condition.
