Lack of sleep is a serious issue. However, most of the root causes for sleep problems are things we have some control over. Recognizing these areas and addressing them can help prevent or resolve sleeplessness.
Some people treat sleeping problems like they are an inevitable part of life. Many don't even think insomnia or sleeplessness is much to worry about. However, a lack of sleep effects your energy level, productivity, memory, focus, immune system, tissue repair and mental health. Sleep impacts a wide range of physical and mental factors in our lives and sleep problems shouldn't be taken lightly.
Sleeping problems usually have their beginning in something else in our lives other than the actual process of sleep itself. Usually, some aspect of our lifestyle plays a roll in our lack of sleep. Some of the more common factors are stress (work/home/both), poor diet, lack of exercise, medications and depression/anxiety. All to often the daily choices we make rob us of our sleep at night…needlessly.
Other factors that can easily produce sleep problems could be poor sleep habits (staying up late, not allowing enough time for sleep on a consistent basis, constantly shifting schedule, etc.), working split, swing or night shifts and taking certain medications…even over the counter drugs. Also excessive caffeine and even alcohol can impair sleep and make it ineffective.
Physical issues can also cause sleeping problems. A couple of the more common are sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. These can prevent a person from being able to sleep or can wake them up frequently at night.
The good news about many of the causes for sleep problems in most people is that they can be dealt with and resolved. The biggest obstacles are often what we put in our own way. Not taking our insomnia seriously and not discussing it with a doctor hinder us from the start. Yet we struggle through our tiredness day after day and wonder why.
The key is to start identifying the things that might be behind your sleeplessness. Going through the list of things above will give you a headstart in what to focus on. The majority of these issues can be helped through adjusting the choices we make, changing our lifestyle and working to improve the quality of our sleep in lasting ways…not just popping a pill to get to sleep, but helping our bodies do it naturally.
If stress is causing your sleeping problems, then get rid of what is generating the stress or add activities to your life that help reduce the effects of stress. If poor sleep habits are the culprit then look at ways to adjust your bedtime routine and schedule so you get the best sleep possible. Consider adding natural supplements that have chamomile, valerian and other ingredients that are designed to work in concert with your body to help you sleep. The point is that you have some control over this process and you need to play an active roll in getting your sleep back.
