Montmorency cherries for a good night’s sleep. Dr Russell Reiter from the University of Texas Health Center has found from his studiesĀ that tart cherries of the Montmorency variety are particularly high in melatonin. So what does this have to do with a good night’s sleep?
Melatonin controls sleepiness at night, and wakefulness during the day, which means it acts to control the circadian rhythms, our 24 hour time-keeper. Can it be so simple, a bowl of cherries for a good night’s sleep? It would appear so, forget the Ambien, and other hypnotics, add a bowl of cherries to your daily diet.
An added bonus, Melatonin is also a potent antioxidant so it will gobble up the free radicals in your system, while at the same time regulating your circadian rhythms.
