Acting out one’s dreams in a violent manner may indicate the onset of a neurodegenerative disorder, such as dementia or Parkinson’s Disease. Mayo Clinic researchers along with other international researchers have found through their extensive studies a correlation between violent REM sleep and future neurodegenerative diseases.
This REM sleep disorder appears to occur mostly in older males, they have been known to strike their bed partner in a violent manner, sometimes causing significant injury. They have no recollection of the incident the following morning, nor do they recollect any dream which may have triggered the violence.
Although the correlation between violent REM sleep disorder and later dementia has been found by researchers, this does not indicate that having the sleep disorder definitely indicates later dementia.
