Obstructive Sleep Apnea Linked to Early Brain Damage.

A study reported in Science Daily found that patients who suffered from obstructive sleep apnea showed gray matter loss in brain areas which regulate breathing and speech. This study involved two sets of male patients, 21 who had obstructive sleep apnea, and 21 who did not have the disease. The MRI results on the patients with obstructive sleep apnea revealed loss of gray matter in areas of the brain which control speech, movement and emotion. The patients who did not have the disease were found to have no evidence of loss of gray matter.

A significant number of the OSA patients were found to have suffered speech difficulties as children, this lent support to the earlier findings of the scientists, and they then were able to associate childhood speech disorders with early brain damage and development of obstructive sleep apnea.
