I need some tips on getting back to sleep after nightmare?? im not talking little childish nightmares, I mean nightmares about traumatic events.

  • Get up STRAIGHT away and get busy. If you know you have had a real nasty dream don’t give yourself the time to dwell on the details just get up and make a hot chocolate or something then relax and watch TV or something for half hour then try to get back to sleep again.

  • Maybe your best idea is not to try go to straight back to sleep unless that naturally happens. If not then try walking around, even walking in the outside for a few minutes might help settle you.

    Also perhaps try some calming music like these chillout tunes that come on CD, even if you play that quietly overnight it could help to relax you and reduce the chances of getting the nightmares.

    Apart from that, have you seen a therapist about them? Could be you’re getting them because you’ve not delt with them….assuming the events are real and not just nightmare creations.

    If you are trying to get back to sleep, the best thing you can do is focus on your breathing. Breathe deep into your stomach. Think of your stomach like a balloon and you are filing it with air.

  • well first, get out of bed, take a comfortably warm shower or something.

    whatever it takes for your brain to be awake enough for it to be totally aware that the nightmare was a dream. i mean more than you setting up in bed, totally weirded out, and saying, “oh, that was a dream.”

    anyway, doing almost anything , out of bed for up to 20 minutes. that should be long enough for your adrenalin to go down, so your brain and body are capable of relaxing.

  • I use to suffer from horrible nightmare after a series of very traumatic events (death, divorce and loss of job) in a three month period caused a lot of unresolved issues. The thing which helped me the most was analyze them, write down the nightmare once you have it and then ask yourself, why is this so scary for me. Confront the issue i.e death in the family, go to the grave and talk to the person, simple actions like those can clear up a lot of emotional and sub-conscious problems. If they continue to happen then you should seek professional help. A quick fix, which I would not recommend is sleeping pills, you don’t usually go into REM therefore no dreams, but you risk causing even more mental restlessness.     Usually bringing it out in the open helps your mind relax a bit about these issues causing nightmares. Talking to a person you trust and look up to, makes you feel safe and that may be what you need.

    I cannot be sure because I don’t know anyhting about you or what sort of nightmares you’re having.

    Meditation also might help calm your mind.
