My baby refuses to sleep on his back?

Kim S asked:

My baby absolutely refuses to sleep on his back. He basically did not sleep for his first 2 months of life unless he was being held because he cannot sleep in his crib on his back. I tried placing him on his side but that didn’t work either because he would accidentally roll over onto his back and wake up screaming. The wedges designed for side sleeping also didn’t work either. After 2 months of this we finally gave up and allowed him to sleep on his stomach. I know all about the risk of SIDS but it also seems very unhealthy and cruel to deprive your child of sleep or force him to sleep in a way that is uncomfortable for him. I don’t know what else to do because ever since I allowed him to sleep on his stomach he’s been sleeping wonderfully! Has anyone else dealt with this situation and if so did you allow your child to continue to sleep on his back? Did you worry about SIDS?

  • The fear of sids hadn’t desended when I was having babys, and a child needs to feel secure, yours is old enough to move it’s head, and sleeping on its stomach tends to give it a more comforting position, when you hold your child close , does his front not rest on your body? Comfort. I wouldn’t worry about it. just don’t put toys and things in the crib with him.

  • let me tell you something i have 2 kids and BOTH of them would not sleep through the night unless they slept on there stomachs and both were about 2 months old as well. Anyway with my first i was so sleep deprived not from him but because i was so nervous that he would suffer SIDS! But eventually around 8 months he started rolling on his back but hes 2 now and still falls asleep first on his stomach. My 5 months is sleeping on her stoamch and has for 3 months. LISTEN if they sleep on there back they risk throwing up and choking if they sleep on their side theyre uncomfortable, if they sleep on their stoamch they suffer SIDS homestly there are risks no matter what we do. Get some sleep and relax just make sure he gets alot of tummy time so you can see that he can pick his head up well. but relax alot of us have done that and your not a bad parent whatsoever!! Plus SIDS can be caused from SEVERAL other reasons as well. you show concern and thats great! you wouldnt be a parent if you didnt!! Good Luck and check on him but dont stress he will be fine!

  • i have a 1 month old baby. My son hates sleeping on his back. What i do is lay him on the couch on his side lay him up against the back of the cushion on the couch, my son also likes laying on a really soft pillow on his side. But my grandma lays him on his stomach here but just make sure you watch

  • My daughter is the exact same way. She WILL NOT sleep if she is on her back. I, like you, tried putting her on her side, and she would sleep for a few minutes that way, but once we put her on her stomach, she will sleep now. The first few times we did it, I could not get ANY sleep because I was so worried about her, and now, I still worry about her, but she seems to be ok. She now goes to daycare and they will not put her on her stomach and she won’t sleep there either.

So I am not telling you to let the child sleep on its stomach, but mine has since about 2-3 weeks old and she is now 2 months.

  • My baby refused to sleep too and I did not think to put her on her tummy. I swaddled her, held her and let her sleep in our bed because I was so scared of SIDS. When she was old enough to roll over on her own, she did.

  • Hmmm same situation here with my son who is now 8 months old (tomorrow!). I gave in and let him sleep on his tummy and just made sure there was nothing in there with him. I know all of the warnings about SIDS but what can you do? He rolled himself over by 2 1/2 months anyways so I gave up. Good luck!
