k asked:
I don’t often get nightmares or bad dreams, but when I do 9 times out of 10 they involve my family and this old house we used to live in when I was a child. In my dreams, either my family terrorizes me or I feel helpless towards them. Sometimes I wake up crying and choked up. Is this normal? I know that everyone gets nightmares at least once in a while, but is it normal to always have the same kind of nightmares/bad dreams? And also, to wake up crying?

Old houses represent your view of yourself.
If you have good memories of the house and it is in good repair, you are trying to work something out that is familiar from your past.
It sounds like you are under emotional stress and feel your family can’t support you in this. Exams? Marriage/Relationship decision coming up?
The persistence of the type of dream means you are missing the answer.
Write down on a piece of paper before you go to bed that you want the answer to the dream presented to you in a clear way by the time the alarm goes off.
Sometimes the expression of a definite request is all that is needed to resolve this.
no its not unusual. Mines are too. and yes they can get really scary.
try to have uninterrupted sleep. if you can, have your bedroom be pitch black and quiet as much as possible when you sleep, no humming from electric fans, no clock ticking etc… don’t sleep with a full stomach or w/ wet hair. try to sleep in the position your are comfortable..on your back or on your right side (if you sleep on your left side, you are slowing down the blood circulation to your heart)… etc..
…and if you believe in ‘old home remedies’, tie a small knot on one of the corners of your blanket.
goodluck
Absolutely not! I used to have the same exact dream once a month, but it ended finally, and I never had it again. And, I also had the dream where these murderers would always be after me, but I would be in a difference place when it happened. But, that ended too, in quite in odd way. Don’t worry about it (: I’m sure it’ll be over soon. Even if they happen a lot. My murderer dream went on for a year, and I was relieved when it ended.
Nop, just don’t think too much of it and you will be fine. When I was young, I too have the same nightmare frequently (not everyday). The story is the same but the scene might be a bit different. These nightmare occurs frequently for about 2-3 years before it stops abruptly.
I would say that no, it is not necessarily “normal”, but it’s also not uncommon. Reccuring themes usually indicate unresolved problems or issues.
Asking youself a few questions may help to make sense of the dream and even ultimately put it to rest.
How old were you when you lived at that house? What was going on then? Was it a period of stress for you? What do you remember most about that time? You may really have to give it some thought before the answers start coming.
You might also want to think about what is going on in your life NOW when those dreams occur. Is there a pattern? In other words does something in particular seem to be going on in your life now when these dreams occur? Try to keep track of this and it may eventually make sense to you. Once it makes sense and you can better understand yourself, then the emotions that come with these dreams will likely be easier to handle. Best wishes. .
