Dysomnias or Parasomnias, Which Do You Have?

Gary M. Miller :

Sleep disorders come in many different categories. All of them are a serious threat to our health. In order to better understand sleep disorders, it can simplify things to separate them into two different categories. Scientists have done this for the sake of better research and better treatment solutions. These two categories are referred to as “Dysomnias” and “Parasomnias”. Dysomnia’s tend to be the more serious of the two disorders. Parasomnias are less serious but can also progress into more serious disorders if they are not addressed.

Dysomnia is a category of sleep disorder which is commonly associated with insomnia. Its subcategories are intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic means the disease arises from within one’s body. Extrinsic means it is due to the conditions of the environment or brought about by pathological conditions beyond the control of the individual. It may also be brought on by disturbances in the circadian rhythm which is also beyond the control of the person. Disorders belonging to the Dysomnia category include insomnia, Narcolepsy and Sleep apnea. Insomnia is a kind of disorder where the person struggles to fall and stay asleep and can miss days in a row or even weeks of sleep. Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder where the patient has a weakening of their bones due to gradual muscle tone loss known as cataplexy. Patients experience sudden falling when they suffer from Narcolepsy and these events often take place at times when the person experiences sudden emotions like laughter. Sleep apnea is associated with the difficulty in breathing which is caused by the collapsing of the breathing passage. Certain individuals have airways which are rather narrow and this results in a loss of REM sleep and a breakdown of their energy during the day. In addition to these basic disorders categorized as Dysomnia, Restless Legs syndrome is also a disorder in which a patient experiences itchy, tingling sensations on his or her legs causing them to continuously move. Finally, hypersomnia is also categorized as a Dysomnia disorder and there are two types known as Recurrent hypersomnia and Posttraumatic hypersomnia. All of these disorders are extremely serious and must be treated by a physician.

Another category is the Parasomnia disorders. These include Sleep walking, Sleep talking, Sleep terrors/nightmares, toothgrinding, bedwetting and sleep sex! These all fall under the category of Parasomnia and are not considered to be as dangerous unless you are sleeping next to the person! Such disorders may be attributed to any number of mental disorders or may be due to Mood disorders, Anxiety, Panic, Depression or excessive alcohol intake.

Sleep disorder may occur in any person at any age. They can cause the person a lot of damage if they are not careful and require more caution for the family members during the night. Sleep apnea is a very serious matter, as some patients have actually died from a lack of oxygen and others suffer brain damage because they are not getting the proper amount of oxygen as they sleep. If you feel that you might be subject to a sleep related problem, you should definitely see a doctor immediately. Don’t be afraid to consult a professional and ask for help!

Prevention is actually the best cure a person could ever pursue and knowing the importance of a good night sleep is a big part of that prevention. Sleep must not be viewed as an obligation but a privilege and a necessity for our body. Be aware of the consequences of not maintaining a healthy lifestyle and stay abreast of the many new discoveries concerning sleep related ailments today. .

  • This disease can become persistent with chronic schizophrenia and therefore debilitating. Ambien does a wonderful job of stopping these sleep panic attacks also known as sleep terror disorder, but only work for about four or five hours during a night. I have schizophrenia with auditory and visual hallucinations and the characters that live unilateral to me inside of my head whom cause these hallucinations also cause my sleep terror disorder. Also, I leave the television on while asleep and it changes the dreams I have to follow what is on the tv, but the insane dreams I do have if I run out of ambien are very stong and annoying they cause me to wake up or remain in a constant dream that lasts all night and I do not actually get any sleep unless I take the full doesgae of ten mg Ambien, if I take this medication and stay awake as the neurotransmitters in my brain are so active sleeping pills only make me slightly tired for about thirty minutes, if I do stay awake the voices in my head fall asleep themselves and only respond to things that I say to them ad do not create so many hallucinations and do not respond as often, but they are still slightly awake and cause persistent sexual arousal disorder. I am allergic to seroquel and it causes me to remain awake and feel as though I am on fire and am also freezing and also cause serious neurological problems drive me more insane than the schizophrenia does all day. If they could develop a hypnotic sedative I can take during the day that does not cause outward visual hallcuinations such as the wood grain on a wall becoming people and they make out and they rowboat and do all sorts of crazy crap that would be the greatest medicine I have ever taken, as the Ambien is effective for my schizophrenia up to like seventy five percent, rather than the highest does of Lithium only like ten to twenty percent effective then you could get rid of the words, schizophrenia medication is effective in twentyfive percent of cases and change it to seventy five percent effective, also hypertension drugs stop a lot of postural hypertension and can lessen any anger you will have towards the schizophrenia (skitzophrenia) bacteria, outdated dna, brain damage, drug use, multiple personalities (meeps), child trauma protector personalities (now jackasses), disassociative amneisa causing, or whatever else they will say schizophrenia is caused by problems. PLEASE DEVELOP A HYPNOTIC SEDATIVE I CAN TAKE DURING THE DAY TIME THAT DOES NOT CAUSE HALLUCINATIONS AND MAKES THE SCHIZOPHRENIA FALL ASLEEP SCIENTISTS WHO WILL READ THIS YEARS FROM NOW.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for visiting.

If you have schizophrenia, then I assume that you may be taking an anti psychotic drug, and these drugs are not without side effects. Could they be a cause of your insomnia?

Ambien taken alone or with other drugs, is to be taken with a great deal of caution. A number of people taking Ambien have had some strange experiences, ones that they don’t really recall themselves, however, when confronted with the evidence, they had to accept guilt.

Some have been for a drive in the middle of the night, while asleep! Driving while awake is difficult enough, but while asleep, it’s too scary to think about.

Others have hit the fridge and stuffed their faces with any number of goodies, then gone back to bed. Waking next mornin to the rude shock of a mess of food all over the floor and kitchen benches.

Others have picked fights with neighbors, whilst asleep. Some have broken into houses and stolen stuff, the list goes on.

The last thing you need is an hypnotic sedative.

I believe that schizophrenia can be cured, but not with heavy duty drugs, these only contain the psychosis, and so often the side effects of the drugs, are nasty and long lasting.

I wish there was an holistic retreat for those who have schizophrenia, to be treated with alternative medicine.
