I started sleep walking/talking when I was 8 years old. I started screaming in my sleep and hallucinating in my sleep when I was 19. (seeing people in my room, thinking things are dropping on me, etc.) I’ve stopped watching anything scary on TV and only surround myself with positive, non-scary things.

Still, I wake up screaming–which scares my husband to death every time I do it. The only thing that seems to trigger it is when I’m tired–but, even then, I don’t ALWAYS do it when I’m tired.

Now, I’m pregnant again, and afraid I’m going to hurt myself. The other night, I sprinted down the stairs so fast my husband couldn’t keep up with me…

How can I stop doing these things? Who could I contact for help?

I have been doing the same things as you explained for years. It went away for a few years but it comes back. I’ve torn down X-mas trees while sleep walking, among other things. Sprinting downstairs was my usual for awhile. I sleep downstairs now. Anyway, I’ve tried to figure this out, but…. I use to be a worrier and I wouldnt say high strung but somewhat emotional. I made sure everyone in my world was comfortable and taken care of. All the details. I believe when my body lays down to rest that my mind is still in rush hour. Or possibly any stress from the day I would let linger in my thoughts. Im 42 now and I havent had an episode for awhile. I have really changed up my approach to things that would set me off. I dont argue with anyone anymore. I dont let dramatic people in my everyday life. I quit trying to change people. I simmer more now than boil over. Maybe that helped. I wish I had more answers for you but I wanted to at least let you know that you’re not alone and it does go away.

This might sound silly but somehow, with Gods grace, its worked! My son was mauled by a dog when he was very young. Even though he was in routine therapy, he still had these strange nightmares where he would appear to be awake, but was obviously in a sleep state. He would bolt awake and leap off of the bed, run from room to room, at times obviously terrified. I filled plastic water guns with colored water and before bed put them on the nightstand. This was the “magic water” that made bad things disappear forever. The next time he had a nightmare like that, he immediately searched for the “weapon” – apparently though asleep, his conscious mind remembered they were there, and after “shooting” all of the bad stuff in the room, he went back to sleep. This took a total of a week and in the end, I had not so nice looking white walls but there were no more nightmares and the peace was well worth it as you can imagine. I know there is a difference between an adult and child, but perhaps in your subconscious, when sleeping, you are still a child? …….. Best of luck to you.
