What is Acid Reflux? How Can You Cure It?

Jacob Robinson asked:

What is acid reflux? Acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition wherein acid travel back from the stomach into the esophagus. The following are symptoms of GERD:

•    regurgitation

•    heartburn

•    chest pain

•    difficulty in swallowing and hoarseness

•    asthma

•    dental erosion

Many have been wondering what is acid reflux and what causes this condition. Acid reflux occurs when the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus does not function properly. If the pressure in the stomach rises higher than the sphincter it will result in acid reflux. There are several methods that can cure acid reflux. Taking medications like antacids, proton pump inhibitor, histamine, and H2 antagonist will help lessen the discomfort for a shorter period of time. However, there are studies that antacids can worsen the condition. In order to digest the food in the stomach enough acid should be present. To be able to cure acid reflux it is best that the person should know first what is acid reflux? After defining the term it is now time to discuss the natural way of treating GERD. Why natural? Because it has less side effects and it cost less. One of the important ways to treat acid reflux is by changing lifestyle.

Eating a  snack in between meal causes the stomach to pump out acid slowly instead of keeping it for mealtimes when it is needed most. Another important thing in curing acid reflux is to prevent drinking too much water while eating a meal. According to a  study too much water dilutes the acid needed by the stomach in digesting the food.

Eating large meals is one cause of acid reflux. The increase in pressure on the stomach causes the content to be moved out and up into the esophagus. It will take two hours before the food will be able to complete its cycle from the mouth to the stomach. It is better to get rid of fried food and those that contain refined sugar and caffeine.

Curing acid reflux naturally will surely help the body to overcome the recurrence of the said condition. Stop using antacid it will only worsen the condition. Antacids lower the acid that the stomach needs. The stomach will not be able to digest the food thoroughly if it does not have enough acid. Curing acid reflux naturally decreases the risk of harmful effects.

A person suffering from  acid reflux should be very conscious of what he eats. Attention should be paid not only to how much is eaten, but also what is eaten. The person with acid reflux should eat smaller meals every couple of hours, instead of eating two or three large meals. It is also best if the person will not take any meals at least three hours before bedtime. Acid reflux can be treated in a natural way without spending a lot of money.
