REM sleep
Lionel Bastion asked:

Getting a good nights rest should be very important to everyone. The length of sleep is not the most important thing, but the amount of deep sleep and REM that we receive. Having the right bed for you can greatly increase deep and REM sleep cycles. An adjustable bed to get the perfect position you desire and a full memory foam mattress to relieve pressure points and fully support the body is an excellent step up in achieving the goal of getting a better night’s sleep. By having the right bed that suits your comfort level, it will be easier for you to obtain a better sleep by keeping you comfortable, restful, and allow you to reach and stay in the deep sleep and REM phases of the sleep cycle.

Deep sleep is the most vital stage of the sleep cycle, as it this stage that we are able to repair our body. In this deep sleep stage the blood flow supplied to the brain decreases and flows towards the muscles instead, which restores our physical energy. The brain is able to restore the energy that we use while we are awake. Research has also shown that immune functions also increase during deep sleep. If the deep sleep stage is shortened too much, you will not wake up feeling refreshed and can sometimes feel as though you got barely any sleep.

REM sleep is a stage of repairing the mind and is known for processing emotions, memory, and relieving stress. This stage of sleep is very important for obtaining a better long term memory. The REM stage is also known as dream sleep and REM stands for “Rapid Eye Movement”. It is in this stage of sleep that dreams occur. During the REM sleep stage your breathing starts to get more rapid, the heart rate increases, blood pressure rises and rapid eye movements occur. Unlike deep sleep, the brain is very active during REM sleep, but the muscles become stiffened. The brain is at least as active during REM sleep as it is when you are awake. The face, fingers, and legs may also twitch during this stage.

Deep and REM sleep are both very important in the sleep cycle. Deep sleep repairs the body while REM sleep helps to repair the mind. Getting an adequate amount of these types of sleep is essential to a person’s health, whether you realize it or not. You will wake up feeling much more refreshed and feel better throughout your day. A way to help get this deep and REM sleep that the body requires, a better mattress or an adjustable bed that has adjustable positions for you to get comfortable in is a great option. There are also memory foam mattresses for adjustable beds that will contour to the shape of your body, getting you much more relaxed and able to stay in these stages of sleep longer. Having the right bed and mattress may be much more important than you thought.

sleepwalking in children
Eric Cho asked:

SLEEPWALKING DEFINED

Sleepwalking is a sleeping disorder characterized by behavior usually performed in a wakeful state. Examples of wakeful behavior are sitting up, walking, and sometimes even talking to others. Also known as noctambulism or somnambulism, sleepwalking is listed in the DSM-IV-TR and identified as a disorder by the American Psychiatric Association. Although incidents of sleepwalking are used by professionals to determine a mental disorder, it is not classified or identified as an emotional problem. It is instead defined as a brain disorder.

During an episode, the sleepwalker behaves according to whatever he or she is dreaming about. Eyes may be open, but they do not acknowledge events, people, or objects around them. This phenomenon typically begins as a sleepwalker experiences stage four sleep (slow-wave sleep). Yet upon waking, they may remember a little of the event, or none at all with the entire episode lasting for only a few minutes or more. Despite myths and warnings, there is no harm in waking a sleepwalker. Awakened sleepwalkers will appear a little disoriented and confused about where they are, how they got there, and why – but they can return to bed easily with little to no fuss.

SLEEPWALKING STATISTICS

Sleepwalking rarely occurs in individuals who don’t already suffer from some other psychiatric disorder or problem. But when it does occur, it occurs in more males than females, and only in 1 – 5% of children. By the time sleepwalking children reach the teen years, sleepwalking usually stops on it own without medication, diet change, or behavior modification. Chances are that there is a history of sleepwalking somewhere in the family of frequent and persistent sleepwalkers, and the number of sleepwalking adults is less than the number of sleepwalking children.

WHAT CAUSES SLEEPWALKING

Anything that affects the nervous system can be blamed for sleepwalking, and that includes consumption anti-depressants or sleeping pills, a severe illness, and the experience of extreme emotional stress such as a death or a frightening event. Hormones may contribute to sleepwalking episodes as well so events that cause drastic hormonal changes (adolescence, menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, etc.) could play a role in triggering sleepwalking episodes too. There are no known foods that trigger sleepwalking.

HOW TO CURE SLEEPWAKING

Unless sleepwalking is a regular occurrence and it places its victims in danger, there’s no need to seek medical attention. When sleepwalking happens repeatedly or puts the sleepwalker in harm, a physician may prescribe benzodiazepines to keep the patient in bed. Benzodiazepines are lipophilic amines and they’re used as tranquilizers, sedatives, hypnotics, or musclerelaxants. Some well known brands are Ativan, Halcion, Libritabs, Librium, ProSom, Restoril, Valium, Versed, or Xanax,

SLEEPWALKING DANGERS

The physical dangers of sleepwalking are pretty obvious, however besides risking bodily harm or even death, sleepwalking individuals actually lose a lot of sleep since a portion of their sleeping time is spent in activity. As a result, they may experience fatigue during the daytime and will more than likely experience insomnia during the nights that they slept during the day.

Sleep talking
Nicholas Tan asked:

Sleepwalking and sleep talking are members of a group of sleep disorders called parasomnias. Though it’s not known just exactly why children walk and talk in their sleep neither are considered to be serious disorders, and are not result of any physical or psychological problem.  Both occur during a child’s deep sleep, approximately one to three hours after falling asleep.

Sleep talking occurs more often than sleep walking in children, though they often do occur together. Parasomnias tend to run in families, and children may experience one, two, or all three types.

Of course, the main concern parents have for their sleepwalking child is their safety. A sleepwalking child does not have the judgment capabilities he normally does during waking hours, which makes the likelihood of injury when sleepwalking great. It may be difficult for parents to protect their sleep-walking children, since they don’t make much noise, which makes it difficult for parents to tell when their children are sleepwalking.

The best way to protect their children is to be prepared. Parents should completely evaluate their child’s room for any potential hazards. Bunk beds or any bed that’s high off the floor is probably not a good idea for a sleepwalker.  Toys, shoes, and any other objects on the floor should be picked up and put away prior to bedtime. Bedroom doors should be shut and windows should be locked, which will help ensure the child stays in his room and does not wander around the house. Alarm systems for doors, windows and even the sleepwalker’s bed might also be considered by parents. Sleepwalking usually stops by the child’s adolescence, and as long as safety precautions are taken, should not be a great cause of concern.

Sleep talking is much more common parasomnia.  Children who talk in their sleep may speak very clearly and be easily understood, while others may mumble, make noises or be incoherent. If children are speaking loudly and seem upset, it might be a good idea for parents to go to their children and comfort them without waking them.  If they’re simply talking, it’s best just to leave them alone. The episode will probably end within a short period of time.
