Simvastatin has been implicated in a number of sleep disorders experienced by people taking this drug to lower their cholesterol. Other cholesterol lowering drugs have not been found to have this effect, probably because unlike Simvastin they are not fat soluble and do not cross the blood brain barrier. People taking Simvastatin reported a general decrease in their quality of sleep, with insomnia and nightmares being the most common type of sleep disturbance reported.
This is not to say that because the other statin drugs are not associated with sleep disturbance, they are safe, this is most definitely not the case. Here are some of the most commonly reported side effects: muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, lack of energy, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, pain in the upper right arear of the stomach, nausea, extreme tiredness, unusual bleeding or bruising, loss of appetite, flu-like symptoms, rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of the face, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, lower legs, and hoarseness.
The obsession with lowering cholesterol has resulted in people being prescribed drugs which cause massive and sometime irreparable damage to their health. Later studies have found that elderly people with what would normally be considered to be high cholesterol have far better brain function than those of the same age with low cholesterol.
