Cause of Insomnia
Insomnia includes the inability to get to sleep, and to stay asleep, the inability to return
to sleep after awakening in the middle of the night, waking too early, it also includes restless disturbed sleep
whereby the person constantly wakes throughout the night.
There are many conditions which can cause insomnia, a very common one being anxiety, whi ch may be
an endogenous type of anxiety attributable to no particular external cause. This trait plays such a significant
part in the general make-up of the individual that they would generally be described as an anxious type, therefore,
a direct cause of their insomnia may be difficult to find.
Insomnia may result from stress triggered by social causes such as, marriage problems, money
worries, job loss, arguments between family and friends, grief, sickness, stressful work,or any number of other
factors which form part of everday living. In some of these cases when the stress is resolved, the insomnia
disappears, however, in a significant number of cases the stress remains, as does the insomnia.
The medical causes of insomnia may be considerable, from simple aches and pains which cause
discomfort to conditions such as :gastroesophageal reflux, hypertension, atherosclerosis, infections, heart
disorders, asthma, cramps, arthritis, parkinsons disease, pregnancy, PMT, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome,
diabetes, and urinary frequency.
Another cause of insomnia may be fluctuations in hormone levels, at the beginning and end of the
menstrual cycle, low progesterone levels may make it difficult to sleep.IF you suspect this may be a possible
cause, then it might be a good idea to monitor your sleep cycles for a month, this may give you some insight into
your problem. The knowledge gained could then show you when to avoid stimulants which might contribute to
exacerbations of insomnia during these times.Once again hormone fluctuations exert their influence at perimenopause
and post menopause, researchers have found that low progestrone levels at these times have been associated with
difficulty achieving sound restful sleep.
Your insomnia may be a direct result of the medications you are taking, a paradoxical effect of
hypnotics and benzodiazepines taken over time to induce sleep, may actually cause insomnia. Many
other prescribed medications can cause insomnia, such as corticosteriods, drugs for hypertension, asthma,
depression, thyroid drugs, and many more. OTCs such as decongestants, stimulants such as pseudoephedrine, and
drugs for weight loss may also cause insomnia.
Other causes of insomnia may be environmental such as sleeping in a poorly ventilated room,
sleeping in an over heated or an under heated room, bright lights, noise, or an uncomfortable bed. Another
cause for insomnia may be poor dietary habits such as eating large heavy meals before bed, it is far
better make the last meal of the day a light one but nourishing one.
