There is no doubt that allergies contribute to sleep problems, children awakened by coughing attacks, itching noses, sneezing attacks which persist throughout the night, miss out on valuable sleep which is essential to their development .Continued disturbance to children's sleep ultimately contributes to inability to concentrate, resulting in impaired ability to learn, and  increased susceptibility to infections as a result of immune dysfunction from lack of sleep. Problems with allergies suggest that the immune system is already challenged, so in order to avoid further exacerbations of the problem every effort should be made to provide an allergy free environment.

Adults may also have allergies which cause sleep problems, concentration is impaired resulting in poor work performance. There is a general feeling of fatigue throughout the day, an inclination to be depressed , and a tendency to be all too easily irritated by trifles. The adult's sleep patterns may be disturbed by the children's allergies, so their sleep quality suffers.

Many measures are available to counteract allergens in the home, however, some require many hours devoted to their removal. Bedding should be changed on a daily basis, everything in the bedroom should be damp dusted daily, mattresses should be vacuumed, night attire should be changed daily, the floor should be vacuumed every day, and  the amount of furniture in the room should be spartan. Not every parent with a full working day can manage to remove these countless environmental influences which trigger allergies. A much easier way to solve the dust mite problem would be to purchase an air purifier and that would put an end to the daily grind of washing and cleaning.

Allergies and sleep problems may also be caused by diet, and for this reason suspected allergy triggers should be removed from the diet. Although dairy is often singled out as an allergen, and while this may be the case, there are now countless food additives which may bring on an allergy attack. Wheat and wheat products may also prove to be a problem, sodas, chocolate, tomatoes, and the list goes on. Probably the best strategy to adopt is to firstly  have your child or yourself tested for allergies, and then by a process of elimination you may find that your allergies no longer bother you. If your allergies are no longer, so will be your sleep problems.
